Engine will do more harm than good if you're aiming at keeping the range in combat. You'll only need jump drive (if you need emergency mobility), and core computers, though (in case of Lance+NL might need a power upgrade). We are not talking about a dozen fleets here: you'll have to to roll way more range-focused admirals (EC that can go into upkeep instead) to get those 80% for your entire navy. Relying on a single volley from X slot alone you can get away with any relatively small buff. That does require heavy investment in range, though. Either way, under-the-hood stuff is always a mystery, until you bother to disassembly code (and I'm not that interested). To be fair, I'm unsure myself: always was under the impression that repeatables were multiplicative with everything else, unlike that example. Strength Per naval cap is the key here, it's only when that is very close should other factors (such as cost) come into play. And while cheaper ships means cheaper upkeep which means cheaper to go over naval cap, naval cap is still the real bar there. That only gets you 50% more ships per alloy, not double. With fully upgraded core components (only advanced computers, because contingency) it's 1355 and 899. Assuming a completely naked battleship except weapons, an energy BB takes 1060 alloys, while having only the X slot arc emitter takes 580 alloys. Personally, my struggle has always been naval cap rather than alloys. Once you are strong enough to start taking out roaming fleets, you should be. The key number is not how many battleships it takes to completely wipe out a contingency fleet with no casualties, but the amount needed to be able to take fights with minimal casualties. Furthermore, the first volley of the contingency should be tanked by your screening corvettes. This would need testing, but I am pretty sure you get off more than one volley before you come into range. Lances have a cooldown of 8 days, arc emitters 8.1, Neutron Launchers 16 days. With all the range modifiers (+80%), your lances/emitters will have a range of 270, and your Neutron Launchers have a range of 234. If the calculation does work with some degree of multiplicative modifiers, I think this would be one of only two instances in the game where that happens, the second being the job production/upkeep from planet devastation. I remember in the paired content creator stream (drumming up hype for nemesis), Stefan mentioned that with sufficient repeatables the weapons penalty for jump drives became minimal, and demonstrated as such.
